Bananas over books!
Every week day from January 30th to March 3rd, if a child reads a book outside of school, they can add a banana to the bulletin boards in our hallway. If the grade one and two students fill this board by March 3rd, they will get to celebrate their reading successes with a Banana Split! Alternatives will be available for students with allergies!
February Show and Tell
This month we are exploring the theme of family in both social studies and religion. Students who are presenting will be asked to talk about their family's past in the community (ie: they came here from Europe), talk about a significant change in their family (ie: the birth of a sibling), and name a way that a family member is the same or different (ie: a cousin). Students who are not presenting will be assessed on providing appropriate responses - ie: asking questions that are related to the presentation. Items that students could bring in are photos, videos, or drawings of their family or something significant to their family, such as their home or a family crest.

January Show and Tell
This month we are learning about our community's past in social studies. For show and tell, please bring in an item from the past and an item from the present for your child to talk about and compare.
Some examples could be:
- a toy they received for Christmas last month compared with a toy their grandparents played with
- a photograph of their family or friends compared with a photograph of their ancestors
- a book from today compared with a book from several decades ago
- an outfit that kids would wear today compared with an outfit that was popular in the past
I am open to other suggestions! Please email me if you are unsure. Lastly, I will be checking that the leader of the day is speaking in complete sentences when they are presenting their show and tell.
Spelling words December 18-22
Because it is a short week, we will only have five words on this test. Here are our five Christmas themed words:

Spelling words December 5-9
This week, we are starting to learn six new words a week. This week's words are:
December Show and Tell
This month, because it is a shorter month, we will jump into show and tell right on December 5th. The leader of the day will take home the Joy Box to share with their family that evening, and they are expected to bring it back the next day. The only exception for this is for three students who will be taking the joy boxes home for the last three days of November. For show and tell, we will be talking about Christmas traditions. Students will be asked to share a community tradition and a family tradition related to Christmas. Please send in a favourite Christmas story as well. This can be a book, video, poem, etc.
Beginning on November 28th, our first school day of Advent, and finishing on the last week of school before Christmas break, students will get a "joy box" on their day for leader of the day and show and tell (unless they have taken it home before their show and tell day). The joy box contains an advent wreath, candles, a lighter, a Christmas book, and a duotang where families can leave a message for other families. This is done with all grade 1, 2, and 3 classes at St. Francis of Assisi Academy. Please send the joy box back the next day so that the next student can enjoy it with their family.

November Show and Tell
Our theme for this month is "respecting cultural diversity in our community". We therefore need to learn about community as well as cultural diversity. In the first two weeks of November, we will be learning about what a community is, then in the rest of the month, students will share something about their culture. They will present in the morning on their country or countries of origin (to keep it simple, we will limit it to 2). This is what students will present this month:
- With assistance, the leader of the day will find their country on a map and mark it with a pin
- The leader will share something interesting about their culture and how it shapes their identity
- The leader will tell us what language is spoken there.
- Students can bring in an item, but it should be related to our overall theme (ie: something they bought while visiting relatives in their country, traditional clothing, etc.)
At the end of the month, we will talk about similarities and differences between ourselves and our classmates. Let me know if you have any questions!
Spelling words November 4-10
Because there is no school on Friday, we will be doing our spelling test on Thursday, November 10th.

November 1st - Purple Shirt Day
On November 1st, we will be wearing purple to show support for victims of bullying or family violence.
October Show and Tell
This month we are learning about the groups we belong to in Social Studies. On the day that your child is Leader of the Day, they will be doing a short presentation on their groups for show and tell after our morning routine. I will be checking that they have answered the following questions:
- What type of groups do you belong to?
- What helps us to recognize these groups?
- In what ways do you belong to more than one group at the same time?
- In what ways do you benefit from belonging to groups?
Examples of groups include sports teams, choir, church, day care, etc. Students can also talk about the groups that they used to be in (ie: the school they were in last year, the class they were in last year). They can bring in an artifact, such as a photograph of their group, a membership card, a team uniform, a sports medal, they can sing a song they learned in choir. The leader of the day schedule was emailed home last week. Please let me know if your child will be absent the day that they are scheduled and we will make adjustments.
