Welcome to Grade 6 and 7 math and science! 

February 27, 2017

Science 6 - all parents were sent an email today advising of our upcoming unit test on Trees and Forests. Attached to that email is a study guide and Jeopardy review game that can be used at home to study.

Math 6 - students are working on probability in math using several manipulatives such as spinners, dice and coins to determine the theoretical and experimental probability of events.

Science 7 - students just started their unit on Planet Earth. This exciting unit will allow students to learn more about minerals, earthquakes, volcanoes, fossils, geologic time and the rock cycle!

Math 7 - students continue to work on Patterns in Mathematics, including algebra and graphing concepts. 


January 30, 2017

Science 6 - students will be learning this week about the components of trees and what makes a tree, a tree. All visual dictionaries were handed in last week and they have been graded. Students will receive their marks in class today.

Math 6 - Students will be completing  review for their unit test on Patterns in Mathematics. They will write their test on Monday, February 6th.

Science 7 - students will be learning about succession in ecosystems this week and beginning their review for a unit test on Interactions and Ecosystems on Thursday, February 16th. 

Math 7 - students will receive their Integers exams back today. We will be reviewing them before we move on to our new unit focusing on Patterns in Mathematics.

*A reminder that there is no school for students the week of February 20 - 24th due to Family Day (20th), Teacher Faith Days (21st and 22nd)  and Teacher's Convention (23rd and 24th)


January 23, 2017

Science 6 - students are currently working on a visual dictionary assignment that asks them to provide examples and illustrations of the key vocabulary words that we have learned about in our Trees and Forests unit so far. This assignment is due Thursday for 6MK and Friday for 6SB. We will be focusing on this assignment in each class this week.

Math 6 - we continue our learning of Patterns in Mathematics by learning about equivalent equations this week. Students received their Evidence and Investigation Unit Test back last week to take home for your signature and return.

**Please note that all unit tests in science and math are sent home for your signature and return once they have been marked. If you haven't seen the Math Number Relationships Test (sent home 2 weeks ago) or the Evidence and Investigation Unit Test (sent home last week) please remind your child to show you. I have each student place them in their backpack as soon as they receive them.

Science 7 - students continue to learn about Interactions in Ecosystems. We are approaching the end of our unit and notice of a unit test will come in the next two weeks. 

Math 7 - students write their Integers Unit Test on Thursday. As always, this is a cumulative test and will include concepts from previous units on it. All students have now completed a review/study guide which we will go over in class tomorrow.

**Please note that all Grade 7 students will be attending a retreat at St. James Parish on Wednesday. This is a fantastic opportunity for them to build their relationship with God. We are very fortunate to have our NET team deliver the program. Students should bring a lunch that doesn't require a microwave that day.


January 16, 2017

Science 6 - students wrote their unit test on Evidence and Investigation today. Expect to see their results come home later this week for your review and signature. Our next unit will be Trees and Forests!

Math 6 - Students are continuing to learn about patterns in math. They are using expressions to create a table of values this week. 

Science 7 - students just finished their owl pellet dissection lab and have a quiz on topics 3 and 4 on Thursday. A short study guide was provided to students today in class.

Math 7 - students will write a short quiz on modeling and adding integers tomorrow in class. For the remainder of the week, we will work on subtracting integers.

Grade 7 students will receive their Semester One Report Card the week of January 30th. Our new semester begins on February 1. All students will receive an updated schedule for semester 2.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!! I hope you had a joyful and restful Christmas break!

Science 6 - students will be writing their unit test on Evidence and Investigation on Monday, January 16th. A copy of the student study guide has been emailed home to you for reference.

Math 6 - Students are starting their new unit on Patterns in Mathematics. Our goals for this unit will be:

Science 7 - students are finishing their learning on Interactions in Ecosystems. We will be doing a lab this week using Owl Pellets to determine the Owl's niche in the Ecosystem. We also have a quiz coming up on Topics 3 and 4 of our unit.

** Our Christmas Concert starts at 6:30 tonight! I hope to see many of you there.**

Science 6 - students are learning how to perform an ink analysis in class as part of the crime we are solving for our Evidence and Investigation Unit. We will be wrapping up this unit in January with our Calgary Police Service project where students are asked to solve a crime based on the evidence provided.

Math 6 - students will write a math unit test on December 20th. More information to follow in an email.

Science 7 - students are learning about the effect that development has on wetlands in our current lab on wetlands. There will be a quiz on topics 1 and 2 on December 20th. A study group for this quiz is being held on Thursday. All students have been invited to particpate. 

Math 7 - students will be writing a test on adding and subtracting fractions as well as a review on decimals on Monday, December 19th. We will be reviewing in class and a study group is being held on Wednesday for those students who would like to participate. 

December 6, 2016 - Happy Second Week of Advent!

**Please remember to send all Magic of Christmas gift cards in by Monday, December 12th! Help make someone's Christmas special this year by contributing a gift card to a store that a youth would enjoy**

Throughout Advent we will continue to focus on academics in class so it is important that your child be in attendance as much as possible as Christmas approaches. Students missing classes are expected to follow up with me upon their return and complete any missed notes, assignments and quizzes.

Science 6 - for the remainder of this week, students are completing a review on the first half of our Evidence and Investigation unit. We will wrap up the week by comparing our fingerprints to ones we took last week in class.

Math 6 - students are working on determining the prime factors of a number and learning about integers.

Science 7 - we are learning about human impacts on ecosystems this week. We are also wrapping up our Greenhouse Growing Conditions Lab and will be preparing for our next lab that looks at how water moves through wetlands.

Math 7 - students continue to learn about adding and subtracting fractions in Math 7. We will be learning how to add and subtract mixed numbers this week.

Welcome to the first week of Advent. The first candle symbolizing Hope has been lit on our wreath in the classroom and in the school atrium!

Science 6 - students have just been introduced to the Calgary Police Service crime that we will be solving throughout the course of our unit. We will be looking at the initial police reports this week as well as learning how to take and compare fingerprints!

Math 6 - students are working on solving problems that involve multiples. An example would be: 100 people attend a New Year's Eve party. Every third person who enters receives a noise-maker and every fourth person who enters receives a party hat. How many people receive both a noise-maker and a party hat?

Science 7 - students continue to learn about ecology in science. We are currently discussing different adaptations that animals have made in order to thrive in their habitat. We are also learning how to take notes in this unit. The students are working hard on summarizing key ideas, concepts and terms in their reading to transfer into their notes for the unit.

Math 7 - students are currently completing additional practice on adding fractions in preparation for a short quiz on Wednesday. The quiz will ask students to find common denominators and add fractions. 


November 22, 2016

** Adoration is being held at the school for all students tomorrow. Grades 5-7 will have the opportunity to participate from 2:00 - 2:30. What an amazing gift of prayer and time with Jesus to help prepare ourselves for Advent!**

** Students are dismissed at 12:15 this Thursday for parent/teacher interviews which begin at 1pm.I look forward to seeing many of you there.**

Science 6 -  students received their unit tests for Sky Science back today. They are coming home with a cover sheet for your signature. The tests may stay at home for you to review and celebrate with your child. Please return the cover sheet with your signature to acknowledge that you received your child's results. Today we started our new unit on Evidence and Investigation!

Math 6 - students worked today on using multples to solve problems. They are working hard and really engaged in this unit!

Science 7 - most students have completed their unit tests on Plants for Food and Fibre, but as we've had some kids away ill, I will be waiting until all students have written the exam to return the ones completed to students. Today we started our new unit on Interactions and Ecosystems.

Math 7 - students are learning to find common denominators and use them to add fractions. They are catching on quickly and are really engaged in our lessons. They can be very proud of their hard work!

November 8th, 2016

Science 6 students have a quiz on the planets tomorrow and a UNIT TEST on Sky Science on Wednesday, November 16th. Students will be receiving study guides in class tomorrow to help them prepare. I encourage all students to study for a short period of time each evening in addition to the review we will be doing at school in order to be successful on this exam.

Science 7 students have a UNIT TEST on Plants for Food and Fibre on Monday, November 21. Students already have a  study guide to help them prepare and will receive additional review materials this week. I encourage all students to study for a short period of time each evening in addition to the review we will be doing at school in order to be successful on this exam.

**Grade Six Volleyball Players received their permission forms and letters at Friday's practice. Please remind them to return the signed forms to their coaches no later than November 14th**

Math 6 - Students are currently learning about number relationships including how to find the factors of a number, and what it means to be a prime or composite number.

Science 6 - Students have a PLANETS QUIZ on Wednesday!

Math 7 - Students just finished their unit tests on fractions, decimals and percents. We are going to continue to deepen our understanding of fractions in our next unit.

Science 7 - our greenhouse plants are just starting to break the surface of the soil! Students are completing a graded assignment on Topics 4 and 5 of their unit. They will write a unit test by the end of next week.

Math 6 - Students will begin working on unit two in math tomorrow. We will be focusing on number relationships and reviewing the concepts learned in unit one. Please remind your child to return their pink cover sheet with your signature on it from their last exam if they haven't already done so. This helps me know that you've seen their results and have reviewed their test with them. 

Science 6 - Students are reviewing their learning about the planets in preparation for a science quiz next week. I will post the exact date later this week.

Math 7 - students are preparing for their unit test on unit one: fractions, decimals and percents. Their exam will be on Friday, November 4th. While there will be extensive review done in class, I would suggest that students also review their notes at home for a short period of time each evening.

Science 7 - students are beginning their Greenhouse Growing Conditions Lab tomorrow. We will be monitoring the growth of plants inside and outside of a greenhouse over a two week period. Data collection will include, temperature, height and characteristics of each plant. 


October 27, 2016

Math 6 - All students have received their tests and grades back for the unit test. Your child has been asked to bring these tests home with a cover letter to be signed and returned. We are now working on a short review of addition and subtraction operations. Students will have a short quiz next week and then we will begin learning about the relationships that numbers can have with each other including factors, multiples, prime and composite numbers, integers and the order of operations. 

Science 6 - students continue to work with their "home groups" on the characteristics of each planet in our solar system. Each student has had the opportunity to become and expert on one planet and they are now sharing that information with their peers. 

Math 7 - students are learning how to problem solving using percent, including how to find a sale amount on an item that is advertized as a "percent off". This is the last lesson in our first unit, which means that students will be reviewing next week and then writing a unit test on fractions, decimals and percents. More information will follow!

Science 7 - students in 7A received their science quizzes back today, and 7B will receive their's back when I see them on Monday. They did a great job and can very proud of themselves!

**Just a reminder that students are able and encouraged to wear their school appropriate costume on Monday, October 31st! I'm excited to see how creative they are with their costumes!**

**Please note that all grade 6 and 7 students will be attending Mass at St. James Church this Thursday. We are leaving at 9am and will be returning by 11am. Regular classes will resume upon our return.**

Math 6 - Students are bringing home their unit tests to go over with parents. Please take a moment to read and sign the cover letter that is attached to your child's test. Tests may stay at home, but please remind your child to return the signed cover letter. This assures me that you have seen and reviewed your child's test with them. Please note that all concepts on this test will continue to be taught and reviewed all year. Your child will have many opportunities to demonstrate their progression and mastery of the concepts on this unit test.

Science 6 - students are currently working on a "jigsaw" project on the planets in our solar system. They will become an expert about one of our eight planets as part of their "expert groups" and then will meet with their "home group" to share what they've learned!

Math 7 - students received their quizzes and marks back today and they completed corrections where needed. We are now focusing on solving problems using percent, decimals and fractions.

Science 7 - Students write their exam on topics 1 - 3 on Wednesday. They have been asked to prepare by studying for a short time at home each evening. We have also been studying and reviewing at school. 


October 17, 2016

Math 6 are currently finishing their math unit tests on Numeration. We will be moving onto a review of addition and subtraction with large numbers once we're done.

Science 6 are preparing to perform an experiment tomorrow, weather permitting. We will be outside at various times of the day measuring the length of shadows. Say a prayer for us for sunshine! 

Math 7 is currently applying the order of operations to decimals numbers. We will then be writing a short open-book quiz on the 4 goals we have just finished learning about: use patterns to convert between decimals and fractions; compare and order fractions; add and subtract decimals; multiply and divide decimals.

Science 7 spent the morning dissecting a dicot seed (a lima bean) in order to see the plant embryo, embryo root and the plant's built in food! It was a great hands-on learning experience. We are continuing our Plants for Food and Fibre unit and will be completing another lab shortly on the effects of a greenhouse on the growth of a plant. Thank you to everyone for sending in those pop bottles. They will be put to good use! All Science 7 students will have a mid-chapter test on topics 1 - 3 in our unit on October 26th.

Welcome back from the long weekend! I hope that you and your family had a safe and happy Thanksgiving! There are a few updates and changes:

Math 6 will have their numeration test on Monday, October 17th (changed from the 13th) in order to give them more time to prepare and review. 

Grade 6 Volleyball meeting is tomorrow at 12:35 in the Science Lab. No experience is necessary, just a great attitude and enthusiasm! All grade six students are welcome to join the team. Practices will be Tuesdays from 3:45 - 4:45pm and Fridays from 7:45 - 8:45 am in the gym. We have our Division Wide Tournament scheduled for November 17th at Rally Pointe in Calgary. More information will follow for parents of players.

Halloween is quickly approaching. Please check your email for communication from your child's homeroom teacher about costumes and activities for the day.

Science 6 - All science 6 students have a quiz on The Sun and the Seasons on Thursday. We are now moving on and learning about the scientific method in preparation for our Shadow Stick Lab, which students will be participating in and completing next week. 

Math 6 - Students will have a short basic facts quiz on Thursday that will help me see how they're doing in their multipication basic facts from 1 - 5. We are currently reviewing our Numeration Unit in preparation for a unit test, which will be held on Thursday, October 13th. The goals for this assessment are: 

All Grade 6 students - our first volleyball meeting of the year will be held on Wednesday, October 12th in the science lab at lunch time. I hope to see lots of eager students there!

Science 7 - Students are currently completing their chapter one and two review assignment. We will then be moving on to plant reproduction.

Math 7 - Students will have a short quiz on mulitplying and dividing decimals on Thursday. We will then be learning how to apply the order of operations with decimals

Science 6 - **change of date for quiz** We are having our school-wide rehearsal for our Grand Opening Mass on Wednesday, October 5th, so our quiz will now be on Thursday, October 6th.     

Our School Grand Opening Mass with the Bishop is in our gym at 9:30am on Friday, October 7th. I look forward to seeing you there!

Math 6 - students are working on representing and comparing decimal numbers.

Science 6 - Students have a quiz on the Sun and the Seasons next Wednesday, October 5th. We are currently reviewing these concepts in class in preparation for our quiz. Students should be bringing home their notes to review for a short period for a few evenings before the quiz.

Grade Six Volleyball will begin after the long weekend! Please check our school website for an announcement coming soon!

Math 7 - students are currently reviewing whole number long division in preparation for division with decimal numbers. 

Science 7 - students will be completing their Carrot Labs tomorrow and submitting them for grading. We will then begin reviewing for our Graded-Assignment.

Math 6 Update - all students brought home their quizzes to review with parents. All corrections were completed in class. Please take a moment to go through this assignment with your child and celebrate their hard work!

Science 6 - all students received their grades on their Constellation questions and their assignments back today.

It was great to see so many people at our BBQ last night!

Math 7 - students are working on multiplying and dividing decimal numbers next week. They will have a mid-chapter quiz once these lessons are complete.

Science 7 - we are waist deep in lab work! We will be finishing our Carrot Lab on Monday where we examine the xylem within our carrots by dying it blue. We are also finishing our Growing Conditions Lab and will completing a review for our upcoming graded-assignment on sections 1 and 2 of our unit. More information to follow on that.

Math 6 - students just finished a graded-assignment in their Numeration Unit. I will be handing them back on Monday and we will go over them together.

Science 6 - students just finished working on their Constellation Questions and will receive their work back and marks on Monday. We will review them together, and then continue our Sky Science learning with a section on our sun.

Math 7 has a quiz on September 21 on ordering and comparing fractions and adding and subtracting decimals.

Science 7 students are continuing their work on Plants for Food and Fibre this week by learning about the structure and reproduction of plants. They are still collecting data for their Growing Conditions Lab and will also be completing a lab on root systems.

Math 6 will be completing a graded assignment this Wednesday and Thursday on: representing and describing numbers in the millions, comparing and ordering whole numbers, and solving problems involving large numbers

Science 6 students are learning about the constellations in our night sky, including the circumpolar constellations that we see all year.
